My Projects

School Projects

I’ve been assigned a lot of work at John Abbott College that I certainly wouldn’t undertake in my own time. But I did have some favorite school projects I’ve worked on. I realized that the projects I was most excited about were all done with my favorite software. Whenever I get the chance to combine work from Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, or Blender, I seem to feel a lot more accomplished with myself. I also spend more and better time with it. Some of these projects consisted of a vinyl album cover, a 3D promotional convention booth, an energy drink inspired by pop culture, and a movie poster. I have a special fondness for the 3D booth because it was one of my first 3D efforts after learning Blender. I do plan on advancing my 3D tools skillset in the future, as I see it as a big advantage.

Personal Projects

While I have mostly worked on school work, I’ve also worked on more personal work alone. In my first year of Graphic and Web Design, I spent a lot of time making emotes for Twitch. Some personal and some commissioned. Expanding on my vinyl album, I also wanted to animate the album cover as a Spotify canvas video, as I love motion graphics. I’m currently working on going further with this project and introducing my new Blender skills to make an album trailer. In the near future, I’m planning on creating a mockup anime collaboration with computer accessories, using all my favorite software. As it’s something I want to be doing in the future, I think it’ll be better to put it on my portfolio than anything else. My Dream Graphic Design Job

a graphic and web project I made for a dream personal anime clothing brand

Intro

As a kid, I’ve had many different jobs I’ve dreamt about getting into, like working in the video game industry or anything computer related, but I never found an exact position I’d be interested in. Along the years, I started getting interested in Photoshop. This led me down a rabbit hole of learning that kind of software. I tend to change interests very often, but another one that stuck with me since my first year of high school was anime. Watching anime was a form of escape and excitement in my life during tough times at school. Delving deep into it was only natural. After 2 years of social science and thinking of a definitive career I want to settle in. I finally decided for Graphic and Web Design.

School Projects

During my 3 year program, I’ve worked a lot on school projects that didn’t leave much room for personal creativity. It was mostly being guided towards a certain direction. I did manage to add my interests to some of my favourite projects. For example a vinyl album, an energy drink brand, an entire brand identity with respective products, and others being some of those. Those interests usually tended to lean into anime or japanese culture. They felt very natural for me since anime has been such a big part of my life.

My Dream

My dream job as a graphic designer would most likely be to work on an anime clothing brand’s designs or products. Some other ideas I’ve considered lately have been digital marketing for actual anime series, like their social media accounts, posters, advertisements, etc. The same goes for the gaming industry. I would love to work on making graphics or motion graphics for Esport teams or video games. In terms of how I want to work, working remotely or partially remote as a graphic designer would be amazing. I still want to travel or temporarily move to a certain area I want to visit, and working remotely would let me do so.

Post-Graduation Plans

After graduating, my main post-graduation plans are to take some time during the summer to add to my portfolio and work on personal projects. I’ll probably be working part-time during this time to add work experience to my CV. As I’ve mentioned before, my career goal would be to mix my interests, which is when I work the best and have the most fun on projects. Something I enjoy working with is anime and anything to do with it. My creativity tends to spark when I work with anime. I always have so many ideas I want to present.

Skills

Recently, combining my expertise in Photoshop and After Effects with my emerging 3D, Blender talents has really caught my attention. Some ideas I’ve been brainstorming about lately are making anime collaboration product lines in different fields like electronic peripherals, clothing, packaging, etc. I’ve spent a lot of time watching and being involved in anything to do with anime, so ideas and creativity come very easily. After summer, I will most likely be looking for a full-time job I can gain experience from, while I wait and work towards finding a bigger opportunity that aligns with me more.

Travelling

On a more personal note, I would like to visit Japan in Fall 2023, as I really love traveling, and considering I’d like to work in the anime industry, and Japan being the epitome location of anime, it could be somewhere worth considering working in if I can make the effort of learning the language. Traveling and working from home would be a dream of mine, as I don’t think Montreal is a city I’d like to stay in. My only obstacle is learning the language, but it’s something I’m very willing to do if it means I get the opportunity to work in my dream career.

Why Graphic Design?

I always had a hard time finding something I was good at growing up, which in turn made things more difficult when I had to choose what career I wanted to dedicate my education to. Towards the end of highschool, I found myself very knowledgeable in computers and anything virtual, but that wasn’t enough to make a career out of it. After a little time passed, I discovered an artist who worked for a clothing company I was really interested in. His passion and consistency inspired me to give Photoshop a try. I made my first edit and thought I would lose nothing sending it to this random guy I never talked to. He ended up complimenting my work, and even giving advice. We later became very good friends and those words became a realization of the amazing feeling of accomplishment I get from finishing projects I really enjoyed making. From Photoshop, After Effects, Blender, and more, I continuously look on expanding my skills to find that feeling wherever I can.
